(Fremont County, WY) – The National Weather Service in Riverton has issued a Red Flag Warning for Fremont County, in effect until 9 PM on August 9. The warning extends across the state. The NWSR has also issued an Air Quality Alert across western and central Wyoming, including Fremont, in effect until August 10 at noon.
“A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now, or will shortly. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior.”
The NWSR is calling for low humidity (as low as 7%, with poor humidity recovery tonight), and winds blowing at 10 to 20 mph (with gusts up to 35 mph).
The Air Quality Alert is due to smoke from western United States wildfires, which continues to be observed across much of western and central Wyoming and may limit visibility at times.

The Wyoming Department of Health recommends that the elderly, young children, and individuals with respiratory problems avoid excessive physical exertion and minimize outdoor activities during this time. Wildfire smoke is made up of a variety of pollutants, including particulate matter and ozone, which can cause respiratory health effects. Although these people are most susceptible to health impacts, the Department of Health also advises that everyone should avoid prolonged exposure to poor air quality conditions.
