(Lander, WY) – A group of riders rolled into Lander Sunday, marking the end of their cross-country ride toward NOLS headquarters. By way of Des Moines, Iowa, the group of Pittsburgh youth made their way 1200 miles to Lander to hook up with NOLS instructors and take a 16-day trip into the Wind River Mountains.Youth cyclists from Pittsburgh, travelling by way of Des Moines, Iowa, posed for a photo in the Noble in Lander after riding over 1200 miles to NOLS Headquarters. The group of 14-17 year-olds will focus on backpacking, fishing, and leadership skills throughout their 16-day stint, receiving one resupply along the way.
17-year-old Shane Roth, who is a cook at a restaurant in Pittsburgh, talked about what he’s looking forward to most.
“I love to fish and cook’em up,” said Roth. “I want to inspire the younger kids to be better leaders, because that’s what I got out of this when I came two years ago… I hope to be able to be a big brother role model.”

17-year-old cyclist Shane Roth, who is going into the Winds for his second time, showed his shredded cycling bibs outside of the Noble Sunday. “I’m excited for the mountains,” said Roth. “I can’t wait to go fishing and cook some up… last time I came, that was my favorite part.” h/t Carl Cote, County 10
NOLS instructor Zach Taylor, who will be leading the group through the mountains for the second year in a row, talked about what makes this group special.
“Since they’ve already biked all the way here together, they already have chemistry as a group,” said Taylor. “They’re very in shape and motivated to do hard physical things… Expedition behavior will also be a cool thing they’ll be able to take back home from the trip.”One of the riders yelled “Last one’s a rotten egg,” as they headed inside the Noble for celebratory cake at then end of their long ride. h/t Carl Cote, County 10Caleb Friedrich and Shane Roth dueled at the ping pong table in The Noble after finishing their cross-country bike ride to Lander Sunday.Dajuan Green smiled as he readied himself to take a shot during a pool game Sunday. This year was Green’s second cross country cycling trip to Lander. “The best part about the bike ride was the pools in the hotels,” said Green. “It was over a hundred for a few days. It was crazy.”Cruz Bradbury lockd up a few bikes next to the van as riders headed into the Noble for snacks Sunday afternoon.The van accompanying the riders was adorned with stickers from all over the country, along with a few prominent Steelers stickers representing their hometown team.
