(Jeffrey City, WY) – Join the Riverton Museum’s Wind River Visitors Council Adventure Trek series on August 10 for a historical tour and photography workshop in Jeffrey City.
Participants will leave the Riverton Museum at 2 p.m. and drive over as a group to Jeffrey City. Once there, they will explore “Wyoming’s most famous atomic boomtown.” Walk through the streets of Jeffrey City, which is now home to only a few dozen residents when, at one point, it was Fremont County’s third largest town.
Previously, it was a mining town with restaurants, bowling, movies, and a swimming pool. You will learn about the history of this town from former Riverton Museum site manager/employee Zach Larsen, who is an expert on uranium mining in Wyoming and, by extension, Jeffrey City. On the way home, plan to stop by Beaver Rim during sunset.
Admission to the Trek is limited to 20 people maximum, and the cost is $10 per person. Bring your own water, a sack meal for dinner, and hiking shoes.
The Riverton Museum also has a uranium exhibit that people are free to look around at before traveling to Jeffrey City if they get there early. The Museum will be putting their favorite pictures on display from the trek that people take.
