(Fremont County, WY) – The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office has recently been made aware of a scam involving an individual posing as a member of the FCSO, according to a release shared on April 1.
“This individual is calling Fremont County residents advising them they have unpaid citations (tickets) and warrants have been issued,” the release states. “This individual is advising those he calls, if they meet him at the Riverton Sheriff’s Office they can post their bond to him or go to a kiosk to pay for them.”
The individual reportedly is calling from the phone number ‘(307) 855-0487,’ and is identifying himself as ‘Sergeant Detective Michael Whitley.’
“This individual does not and has not worked for the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office,” the release continues. “If you call the number it has an automated answering service identifying as the Sheriff’s Office, as well, to make it appear legit. The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office does not have an automated answering service. Also, the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office does not call individuals to post/collect their bonds; the bonds/fines are collected by the appropriate Court.”
The FCSO is advising against answering the phone if called from that number, and especially not to provide personal information.
The FCSO also advised that if you have provided any information, you can report it to the Sheriff’s Office, your local Police Department, or to ic3.gov.
