(Togwotee Pass, WY) – A skier has been reported deceased following an avalanche accident “in the Togwotee Pass forecast zone” on Saturday, January 4, according to a post shared on the Bridger-Teton Avalanche Center (BTAC) Foundation Facebook page earlier today, January 5.
“We are deeply saddened to report that a skier was killed in an avalanche accident yesterday near Breccia Peak in the Togwotee Pass forecast zone,” the post states.
Breccia Peak is located about 2.5 miles north of Togwotee Pass, near Moran.
Today’s BTAC avalanche forecast summary also informs that another skier was injured in the accident.
The identities of those involved have not been shared at this time.
Four other avalanche-related fatalities have been reported for the 2024/25 season: two in Utah, one in Nevada, and one in Idaho.
Today’s post also informs that BTAC forecasters are “going to the accident site today and will publish preliminary information and a full report as soon as possible.”
“Conditions remain dangerous in the backcountry, particularly in areas with a shallow snowpack,” the post warns. “Weak layers are more easily triggered where they are closer to the surface.”
Togwotee Pass has had both high and considerable avalanche warnings in the past month.
Today’s avalanche forecast puts the rating at “Level 3” for “considerable” danger.
“Human triggered avalanches 1-4 deep are likely in steep terrain today. These avalanches can be triggered remotely from above, below, or next to slopes over 30°. Steep, rocky, and wind affected slopes should be avoided. This includes tight gullies with steep walls. The safest and best riding can be found on sheltered terrain less than 30°.”
“The avalanche center staff sends our sincere condolences to the family, friends, and rescuers involved in this tragic event,” today’s forecast summary concludes.
