On Saturday, February 21st, both the boys and girls Nordic ski teams delivered decisive victories at the State Championships, held at the Casper BearTrap biathlon ski trails. Skiers were delighted to return to town via a victory parade down Main St with many Lander residents cheering their success. The team thanks the LVFD volunteers for helping an already festive day on an even higher note.

This concludes a stellar seven-week season for the Sabers, with both boys and girls teams scoring top points at all events this season.
“It never ceases to amaze me how quickly kids can learn. Many of the team were new to skiing on the first day of practice, and staying upright and gliding was a challenge. Now they glide around challenging terrain with ease. Witnessing the transformation is a treat!” noted coach Missy White.
Coach Jonathan Weaver, who had such a good experience as a frequent volunteer with the 2025 team that he applied to be an official coach this year, followed up with, “I’ve seen tremendous growth this season. They practice hard to learn the skills, and their efforts paid off.”
It’s not just the coaches who are pleased with the season. Sixth grader skier Sawyer Weller shared, “I love this sport because it combines family, friends, and of course, skiing! Just this season I have not only found a love for skiing but also learned to be a better person. I look forward to skiing in the future, with the team, at events, and for fun.”
While the sport is skiing, the team is about more than that. Coach Morgan Schubring pointed out that “Through skiing, the skiers also learn about finding fun in being challenged, being a good teammate, and supporting others. The Lander team is known for its strong sportsmanship. We cheer on our teammates and all the skiers from all teams. The Sabers and their cheering make events a great experience.”
Next year’s Championships will take place in Lander on the Lander Nordic Ski Association Ski trails at the Beaver Creek Nordic trail system on February 20th, 2027.
