(Lander, WY) – Lander Valley High School senior Gavin Romer will continue his football career into college after signing to play at Black Hills State University in Spearfish, South Dakota. Romer was a standout for Lander Valley on the offensive and defensive lines, but he’ll narrow his focus to offensive tackle in South Dakota.
For Romer, the next chapter comes with mixed emotions as he prepares to leave behind the teammates and community he grew up with. “I’m going to miss the people here, especially my family,” said Romer. “I’m going to miss my old teammates because we’ve been playing together since we were in elementary school.”
At the same time, he’s looking forward to the challenge of starting anew in college. “I’m excited to be the young guy again because it gives me so much room for improvement,” said Romer. “I’m excited to experience college and get a degree.” He plans on pursuing a business degree because it “seems to be the baseline for any job or opportunity.”
Black Hills State highlighted Romer’s decorated high school career in a press release announcing his addition to their program:
“Romer arrives in Spearfish following a prep career as a 4-year letter winner and starter and 2-year captain at Lander Valley High School for head coach Jim Burton. He anchored the offensive line as a senior with a season that saw him earn WHSAA Class 3A All-State recognition for his protection up front, helping lead the Tigers to their most wins in five years as they went 8-2 and made an appearance in the WHSAA Class 3A semifinals. Additionally, the offensive lineman from LVHS was a 2-time First Team Class 3A East All-Conference selection and was picked to participate in the 2026 Wyoming Shrine Bowl following his senior year. Gavin is the son of Matt and Destiny Romer and has one sibling, Garrett.”
Romer also took the opportunity to thank those who helped him reach this point and give thanks for this new opportunity ahead.
“I’d like to thank my parents along with all of my coaches,” he said. “Without them, I wouldn’t be in this position… I’m also super thankful for my friends and other supporters because they keep me level-headed.”
