(Fremont County, WY) – Sunday evening, August 24, fire crews were paged to the Sinks Canyon area for smoke reports, according to scanner traffic overheard by County 10.
Responders determined that the smoke was moving into Fremont County due to the Dollar Lake Fire in Sublette County, and not from an active fire in the Sinks Canyon area.
The National Weather Service confirmed as much with the following alert shared around 6:45 PM.
“This smoke and some ash is being carried to the southeast over the Wind River Mountains into the Wind River Basin leading to poor air quality, especially in the Lander area,” the NWSR reported.
While an Air Quality Alert has not been issued for Fremont areas at this time, there is one currently in place for the Upper Green River Basin and Western Wind River Mountains, including the towns of Pinedale, Big Piney/Marbleton, Hoback, and Farson. Outdoor activity is not recommended, especially for the elderly, young children, and those with existing lung conditions.
