(Lander, WY) – Lander Police Department Chief Kelly Waugh has shared an update concerning the reported suspicious package incident from earlier this morning, June 25, which led to the Sweetwater County Bomb Squad being called in to assess the situation.
Chief Waugh’s update informs that at approximately 9:20 AM, the Lander Police Department responded to a report of a suspicious package located roughly in the 400 block of Buena Vista, along the Popo Agie River walk.
Officers secured the area, restricted access to the immediate vicinity, and nearby businesses and individuals were notified, while some areas were temporarily evacuated as a precaution.
The Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad’s ensuing investigation determined the package was a fake pipe bomb.
A pipe bomb is a “type of improvised explosive device,” and is “typically a sealed section of pipe filled with an explosive material, designed to cause harm through fragmentation and blast effects.”
The fake pipe bomb was disposed of by the SCSO Bomb Squad, the release goes on to inform, and there is no ongoing threat to public safety.
The area has since been reopened.
