The Lander Library presents State of Equality: Wyoming Women Get the Vote this Thursday, January 9 at 6:30 pm in the Carnegie Room.
This production is the second of eight features in the Our Human Family Documentary Series which runs through January and February at the Lander Library.
The State of Equality was written and directed by Caldera Productions and co-produced with Wyoming PBS. With the national campaign for a women’s suffrage amendment stalled, the thinly populated Wyoming Territory in 1869 became the first democracy in the modern world to recognize a woman’s unqualified right to vote. Colorful frontier characters, a volatile mix of motives, and the caprice of history drive this story of a neglected chapter in America’s past.
The library is partnering with Lander Womentum for this screening and the discussion afterward. Womentum is a community-based program focused on developing the leadership skills of women through monthly events, workshops, and mentoring relationships. Womentum encourages women to live meaningful lives by committing time and energy to their own growth as well as that of others. Womentum believes that when women define their own goals and are inspired by a supportive network, they become empowered leaders within their community. Lander Womentum, which was established in 2017, is based on a program founded in Jackson, WY in 2006.
