(Fort Washakie, WY) – On the evening of May 19, screenshot images of a text thread made their rounds on social media, which showed messages containing a shooting threat directed at a Fort Washakie school. School administration and law enforcement were later made aware of the threats, and, as a precaution, Fort Washakie schools began with a one-hour delay today, May 20.
According to a message from Superintendent Deb Smith shared on the Ft. Washakie Schools Facebook page late Wednesday afternoon, the threats were ultimately deemed “unfounded” following an investigation by the Wind River Police Department and the FBI.
The message, addressed to “Parents, Guardians, and Community Members,” is available in full below.
“The district takes all threats seriously. Beginning with the report of the threat to Fort Washakie Schools on the evening of May 19, multiple security protocols were immediately implemented and continued throughout the school day to ensure the safety of students and staff.
“Through the investigation conducted by the Wind River Police Department and the FBI, the threat has been determined to be unfounded at this point. We would also like to thank the students, families, and community members who shared information and helped make authorities aware of the situation. Your cooperation and vigilance are deeply appreciated.
The message concludes by stating that school will resume on a regular schedule tomorrow, May 21, with “additional security measures in place tomorrow as an added precaution.”
