(Fremont County, WY) – The Shoshone National Forest Wind River Ranger District Forest Service has announced two closures effective today, August 4, due to grizzly bear activity in the area.
The first is for “Wind River Lake Road and Area.” The Forest Service alert states the purpose of this order is “to protect public safety due to grizzly bear activity at the Wind River Lake Picnic Area and Fishing Access site.’ Details of the closure are below.
Pursuant to 16 U.S.C. § 551 and 36 C.F.R. § 261.50(b), the following is prohibited on a portion of National Forest System Road (NFSR) #515 (Barber’s Point Road) and in the Wind River Lake area, which is described below and shown on the map (linked below) incorporated into this Order as Exhibit A (the “Described Area and Road”):
NFSR #515 (Barber’s Point Road) from its intersection with U.S. Highway 26/287 in Section 28, Township 44 North, Range 110 West to a point approximately 1.12 miles east in Section 27, Township 44 North, Range 110 West; and the area within 200 yards of the shoreline of Wind River Lake and east of NFSR #515 (Barber’s Point Road). The Described Road and Area are in Fremont County, Wyoming.

The second closure is for Whiskey Creek Trail. The Forest Service alert states the purpose of this order is to “protect public safety due to the presence of a cattle carcass and potential for human-bear conflicts.” Details of the closure are below.
Pursuant to 16 U.S.C. § 551 and 36 C.F.R. § 261.50(b), the following is prohibited on National Forest System Trail (NFST) #837 (Whiskey Creek Trail), which is described below and shown on the map (linked below) incorporated into this Order as Exhibit A (the “Described Trail”):
Being on the Described Trail. 36 C.F.R. 261.55(a): NFST#837 (Whiskey Creek Trail) from its intersection with the Shoshone National Forest Boundary to its junction with NFST #804 and NFST #805 in Section 13, Township 40 North, Range 107 West. The Described Trail is in Fremont County, Wyoming.
