Fremont County, Wyoming: The Wind River Transportation Authority (WRTA) is pleased to announce the launch of its Fare Free Summer, beginning June 1, 2026. During this period, WRTA will not collect fares for non-contracted public transportation services.
This initiative is being offered in recognition of the important role public transportation plays during times of financial pressure. As the cost of daily life continues to rise, WRTA recognizes that transportation access can make a meaningful difference for individuals and families who rely on public transit to get to work, medical appointments, grocery stores, community services, and other essential destinations.
“Public transportation is meant to help people, especially during times of struggle,” said Tim Nichols, Director of WRTA. “Fare Free Summer is our way of giving back to the community that has continued to support WRTA and the essential service it provides across Fremont County.”
The Fare Free Summer initiative is made possible through the federally funded grants WRTA receives, along with the generous support of the Governor’s Office through the IIJA Local Match Grant Award and the City of Riverton’s assistance during the FY26 period in helping WRTA meet its local match requirements.
WRTA extends its sincere appreciation to the Governor’s Office, the City of Riverton, and the broader community for helping sustain public transportation during a critical time. Their support allows WRTA to continue serving residents while temporarily removing fare barriers for non-contracted services.
Fare Free Summer applies only to non-contracted WRTA services. Contracted transportation services and partnership-based service agreements are not included in the fare-free period unless otherwise specified by WRTA.
