All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
(Riverton, WY) – On January 30, County 10 shared initial report details of a high-speed chase that took place in Riverton, which resulted in the arrest of the driver, 35-year-old Riverton woman Karita Moss.
The incident’s call log information provided by the Riverton Police Department stated that the chase began when a vehicle fled westbound on Main Street after failing to yield, and continued in the area of S 7th Street East and Jefferson Ave. The log stated that the chase came to a close after the successful deployment of spike strips.
The Wyoming Highway Patrol has since issued a release with additional details about the chase, shared in full below.
On the evening of January 29, 2025, during the Fremont County DUI Task Force, a WHP Trooper attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a dark-colored Dodge Durango for driving with no headlights on. The vehicle fled from the Trooper.
The Lander Police Department located the vehicle and pursued it. The suspect vehicle fled westbound on Main Street. The suspect vehicle was traveling at speeds upwards of 100 miles per hour when crossing the intersection of Hill Street and Main Street.
The pursuit would go into the Airport Hill area, traversing several of the streets in the industrial park. After several minutes of continued pursuit, the suspect headed back down Airport Road towards US Highway 26.
A Riverton Police Officer staged in the area was able to successfully deploy spike strips which deflated both driver-side tires. The suspect then turned westbound onto US 26 while being pursued by the Lander Police Department, Riverton Police Department, Fremont County Sheriff’s Office, Wind River Police Department, and the Wyoming Highway Patrol.
While attempting to make a U-turn and return to town, the suspect vehicle struck a Fremont County Sheriff’s Office vehicle.
After the collision, the suspect continued traveling eastbound towards Riverton. The Trooper in the pursuit was requested to move into a primary position to perform the TVI. After selecting a safe area, the Trooper performed a TVI, making contact on the driver’s side of the suspect vehicle and spinning the vehicle which disabled it.
The five females that were in the vehicle were detained. Three of the five females were arrested, two for local warrants and the driver for numerous charges. All were arrested and charged by the Lander Police Department.
Moss, the driver, was ultimately charged with Eluding, DUI, Property Destruction, Reckless Driving, Failure to Maintain Lane, Duty to stop where injury occurred, Stop Sign, and Reckless Endangering, according to the RPD call log.
The identities of the other two subjects arrested have not been obtained at this time.
