(Riverton, WY) – Fremont County locals gathered at 110 N 6th Street East Friday afternoon for a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the new Wyoming Historical Society headquarters in Riverton.
The society, which started back in 1953, was originally funded by state money under the state archives and DNR. It’s now a completely donor-funded non-profit organization with goals of teaching Wyomingites how to better record and share stories, and to promote education by provide historical resources. The Historical Society also looks forward to holding awards programs, as well as essay contests by working closely with local schools.
Executive Director of two years Aley Philp recently moved to Riverton from Wheatland to work at the new headquarters. Philp talked about a new book by local author George Abeyta, which is some of what the Society has been working on as of late.
“We’re working with George on a book called ‘Powwow Dances of the Wind River,” said Philp. “The book will go back to the early days of powwow dancing with photo examples and even QR codes that will link readers to examples and descriptions of dances.”
“We needed to be more accessible to history people around the entire state,” said Philp, who will be working full-time in the new building right off Main Street.
