UPDATE: Per Fremont County Emergency Management – As of 8:24 PM, all residents in the Twin Creek drainage area east of Highway 28 at Johnnie Lee’s Corner and south of Highway 287 must evacuate immediately due to wildfire threat; the evacuation status has been elevated to the “Go” level. GO NOW! Evacuees are advised to leave toward Highway 287. The “Go” zone is pictured below.
UPDATE: As of at least 8:20 PM, travel lanes are no longer blocked, and WY 28 has completely reopened, according to WYDOT.
(Fremont County, WY) – As of about 4:30 PM, August 9, a Level 2 evacuation notice has been issued for residents from Johnnie Lee’s Corner east through the entire Twin Creek drainage area off Highway 28, due to the spreading of the Weiser Knoll Fire, according to the Fremont County Emergency Management Agency.
A Level 2 threat indicates that there is substantial danger nearby, and that you and your family should be ready to leave at any moment. Residents in the affected area should be prepared to evacuate immediately if conditions worsen or a “GO order” is issued.
Milan Vinich with the has shared with County 10 that some residents in the area have already been told to evacuate by on-site firefighters. Residents in the area have been notified via the Federal Integrated Public Alerting Warning System (IPAWS) and the broadcasting Emergency Alerting System by Fremont County Emergency Management, Vinich said.
Per WYDOT, a WY 28 travel lane is still blocked near South Pass from milepost 58 to 63, and motorists should be prepared to stop and expect delays. The rest of South Pass has since reopened.
