(Fremont County, WY) – The National Weather Service in Riverton has upgraded its Fire Weather Watch for Fremont County (and much of central Wyoming), to a Red Flag Warning, in effect from 12 PM on Wednesday, March 18, through 9 PM on Saturday, March 21.
“A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now, or will shortly. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior.”
The NWSR is calling for low humidities (as low as 12%, with overnight recoveries only reaching 40%), temperatures in the mid 70s (lows in the lower 40s), and strong gusty southwest winds blowing up to 15 to 25 mph (with gusts up to 50 mph) each afternoon.

Chief Ron Wempen with the Fremont County Fire Protection District shared with County 10 that “It is going to be a very critical week ahead with Red Flag conditions,” and that “the small taste of winter over the weekend did very little to help us out” in terms of moisture, so dry conditions will also add to the fire weather risk.
