(Fremont County, WY) – The National Weather Service in Riverton has issued a Red Flag Warning today, February 27, from 11 AM to 6 PM, for areas of the Wind River Basin, including Lander, Riverton, and other portions of Fremont County.
“A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now, or will shortly,” the NWSR explains. “A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior.”
The NWSR is calling for west winds of 15 to 25 mph, with gusts up to 40 mph, humidity levels of 13-20%, and high temperatures in the mid-50s.
“Please do not burn,” Fremont County Fire Protection District Chief Ron Wempen is advising residents in response to the warning.
“It is a RED FLAG day here in The Wind River Basin, and will be Critical Fire weather,” Chief Wempen shared with County 10. “We have been busy, obviously, and this makes it worse. It appears this pattern will continue for a few days, and we want to suggest folks use extreme caution on many activities outdoors.”
