(Hot Springs County, WY) – The Rocky Mountain 2 Team has shared the Red Canyon Fire update for today, August 24, which indicates the fire remains at 124,709 acres since yesterday and has risen to 75% containment.
There are currently 318 personnel on scene.
“Acreage remains the same today as crews continue to detect no heat,” today’s update informs. “Containment increased to 75%. Crews primarily focused on patrolling and mop-up as they start to transition to suppression repair. Yesterday was the last operational shift with an Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) module.”

Operations: Crews across all divisions are transitioning to suppression repair which will include rehabilitation of the more than 110 miles of dozer line constructed during fire suppression efforts. Suppression repair focuses on the Kirby Creek Road corridor today, as repair in Div. C was completed yesterday. Divs. M and H focused on patrolling and mop up yesterday but will transition to suppression repair today. The UAS detected no isolated heat during aerial flights yesterday. Div. M structures are secure as crews carried out mop-up in previously burned areas. Divisions combined yesterday in anticipation of personnel to be released or reassigned as containment increases.
Weather: Today’s weather will be similar to yesterday’s, with sunny skies expected in the morning and high temperatures likely reaching the mid-80s, transitioning to overcast in the afternoon. Cloud cover will give way to cooler temperatures overnight with increased humidity, creating a chance for thunderstorms occurring on Monday.
Closures: Closures include Buffalo Creek Road at the cattle guard, which is closed to all traffic, and eastbound Black Mountain Road from Cowboy Mine Road. Updates are available here.
