(Riverton, WY) – The Riverton City Council passed a resolution at the July 1 special meeting officially banning fireworks within city limits on July 4.
The Council held tonight’s special meeting following community response to yesterday’s resolution passed by the Council, which restricted consumer-grade fireworks to designated areas within the Honeycutt Softball and Saban Baseball Complex (between 7 PM and 11 PM) on July 4. Mayor Tim Hancock clarified a tonight’s meeting that fireworks are only allowed on New Year’s Eve and the 4th of July in Riverton, unless voted on by resolution.
Around a dozen community members spoke out against having the fireworks at the baseball fields during the public comment period, and following about an hour of discussion, the resoltuion banning fireworks on July 4 in Riverton was passed in a 4-3 vote.
Rebecca Brothers, Eric Carr, Karla Borders, and Mike Bailey voted in favor of the resolution/ban, while Karen Johnson, Kyle Larson, and Mayor Hancock voted against the ban.
The decision comes about a week after the Fremont County Commission placed restrictions on fire/fireworks on county property within unincorporated areas of the county, which went into effect on June 29.
