(South Pass, WY) – High winds in the Fremont County area resulted in WYDOT issuing a dangerous wind/blow-over advisory for the South Pass area yesterday, March 9, where WY 28 roads were closed to vehicles under 70000 GVW for much of the day.
County 10 Meteorologist Dave Lipson was able to make it to the Red Canyon area with his anemometer during the high winds on Monday afternoon, where he measured a 107.7 mph wind gust.
Lipson said that the high winds were due to a “combination of a tightening pressure gradient and very strong winds aloft sinking down to the surface” in his weather report yesterday. For today, he says north/northeast winds moving to the west could gust up to 45 mph.
The National Weather Service in Riverton is also predicting more heavy winds later this week, and has already issued a High Wind Watch for Thursday, where 70+ mph wind gusts are possible.
